Antique Woven Hair Pocket Watch Chain Victorian Friendship Mourning Gold Plated
DESCRIPTION
This nicely woven antique hair watch chain probably dates to the mid-1800's.  This chain is approximately 13 inches long including the hook for the watch.  The watch chain has gold plated mounts.  The mounts show tarnish and some wear.  The clasp is good and the hair weaving is intact.  A fob (charm/ornament) could be attached in the center of the chain.
On one end of the chain is a bar that would fit through the button hole on a gentleman's coat or vest.  The man's pocket watch would be clipped on the clasp at the other end of the chain and placed in the gent's pant's watch pocket.   The bar at the end of the chain was placed in a vest or coat pocket button hole.  This would prevent the watch from being dropped if it slipped out of the wearer's pocket.  In the mid 1800's hair weaving was quite popular.  Jewelry as well as wreaths were made out of hair from friends and relatives.  Although woven hair items were often thought of as mourning items, this was not always the case.  Hair of living loved ones and friends was also used in making items such as this watch chain.
